Apprenticeship Appreciation: Dixie Elie

Clay County Hospital’s RN Apprenticeship Program was the first U.S. Department of Labor Registered RN Apprenticeship Program in Illinois. The program was created to build a strong pipeline of nurses in our rural community by allowing students to earn while they learn through education, mentorship, tuition support, and hands-on experience.
Healthcare apprenticeships play a vital role in addressing workforce shortages by creating opportunities for local students to enter healthcare careers while helping rural hospitals recruit, develop, and retain highly skilled caregivers for the future.
Meet Dixie Elie, a member of the fourth cohort of Clay County Hospital’s RN Apprenticeship Program. Dixie is currently enrolled in the Registered Nursing Program at Olney Central College and is part of an exciting new advancement within our apprenticeship program as one of the first RN apprentices placed in the Emergency Department. This unique opportunity provides hands-on, real-world experience in one of the hospital’s most fast-paced and dynamic care settings, allowing Dixie to develop her skills while learning alongside experienced emergency nursing professionals.
Dixie’s journey highlights the impact that hands-on learning, mentorship, and financial support can have on future healthcare professionals. As part of the fourth cohort of Clay County Hospital’s RN Apprenticeship Program and one of the first apprentices to gain experience in the Emergency Department, she is developing valuable clinical skills while exploring the many possibilities available within the nursing profession.
We are proud to support Dixie as she pursues her nursing education and career goals. Her dedication to learning, passion for helping others, and commitment to patient-centered care exemplify the qualities that make great nurses. We look forward to watching her continue to grow and make a difference for the patients and families we serve.
